Pakistan Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers finally approached the highest authority in the Country to seek his support for consolidated OHS legislation in the Country for sustainable development in coming years in view of anticipated economic growth.
ASSE team was invited for a formal meeting at the Prime Minister Secretariat in Islamabad where detailed briefing was given on the subject.
Existing OHS laws are fragmented and mostly out dated. Many sectors have no OHS legislation at all including construction industry where most of the accidents happen.
Matter was raised through conferences, seminars and meetings with concerned officials at the Federal and Provincial levels where ASSE Pakistan team successfully presented their point of view and convinced the stakeholders for getting their support for the cause. ILO also honored the MOU signed with ASSE in Geneva and invited us in the National Tripartite Consultative meeting on OHS legislation.
The Prime Minister listened to our point of view and received copy of draft OHS bill and working paper. A directive was issued to the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reforms to work on OHS legislation with ASSE Pakistan team.
Hope this will be pivotal step towards OHS legislative reforms in the country.
